H. Losing weight

1. Because of its origin, Canadian English has a great deal in common with the rest of the English spoken in North America and is often difficult to distinguish for people who live outside the region. To British people, Canadians may sound American; to Americans, they may sound British. Canadians themselves insist on not being identified with either, and certainly there is a great deal of evidence in support of this view.

2. In a test with professional drivers, the more alcoholic drinks they had had the more certain they were that they could drive a test course through a set of movable posts... and less able they were to do it! So the only way to be sure you"re safe is not to drink at all.

3. The first level of the global sway of English is to be found in those countries, formerly British colonies, in which English as a second language has become accepted as a fact of cultural life that cannot be wished away. In Nigeria, it is an official language; in Zambia, it is recognized as one of the state languages; in Singapore, it is the major language of government, the legal system and education.

4. Mugging means someone pointed a gun, a knife, or some other lethal object and demanded your money and valuables. Do not think that because you are in a «nice» neighborhood it will not happen. People can follow you to your hotel room, confront you in a city park or even when you are in your car (known as carjacking). Do not argue or resist. Do what you are told and hope that you will be able to report it to the police later.

5. Most teenage girls want to be fitter and lose weight, but fewer than half do any weekly exercise, and fewer than half of all young people eat any fresh fruit daily according to research. It found that the very reason that girls want to exercise to improve their appearance, but many do not because they do not like the way that they look while exercising.

6.6. A British restaurant that serves bacon and egg ice cream has been voted the best place in the world to eat in Restaurant magazine"s list of The World"s 50 Best Restaurants. The Fat Duck restaurant, which was runner-up last year, claimed the coveted top spot. Owner and head chef Heston Blumenthal opened his restaurant ten years ago and soon developed a reputation for highly experimental and unorthodox dishes.

7. The writer of Ecclesiastes expressed the same thought thousands of years ago. It is better, he wrote, to have less, but enjoy it more. If you would like to enjoy life more, I challenge you to experiment with me. How could you simplify your life? What could you drop? What could you do without? What could you stop pursuing? What few things could you concentrate on?

E. Youth"s attitude to health

F. English-speaking Canada

G. Principles of good work

H. English for export

1. The roots of Canadian English can be found in the events which followed the American Revolution of 1776. Those who had supported Britain found themselves unable to stay in the new United States, and most went into exile in the Ontario region of Canada. From there they spread to all parts of the country. They were soon followed by many thousands who were attracted by the cheapness of land.

2. The legal limit for driving after drinking alcohol is 80 milligrams of alcohol in 100 milliliters of blood when tested. But there is no sure way of telling how much you can drink before you reach this limit. It varies with each person depending on your weight, your sex, if you"ve eaten and what sort of drinks you"ve had. Some people might reach their limit after only about three standard drinks.

3. British or American, the language is basically the same, and its global stature is backed up by massive English-language training programs, an international business that in textbooks, language courses, tape cassettes, video programs and computerized instruction - is worth hundreds of millions of pounds or dollars to the economies of the US and the UK. The English language is now one of Britain"s most reliable exports.

4. Anyone who is familiar with American media receives the impression that Americans are not too far removed from the days of the Wild West when guys with guns took care of business, both private and public. While American media, like media everywhere, exaggerate and distort, there is a core of truth in these reports. Compared to many countries and cultures, America does appear to be constantly plagued by violence of all sorts.

5. Helen Haste, the author of the report "My Body, My Self. said: «Work has been done before on young people"s behaviour in relation to health, but we were interested in their attitudes to health, fitness and exercise. We can"t persuade young people to change their behaviour just by telling them what"s good for them, but need to

appeal to what is important to them.».

6. Nearly 600 international restaurant owners, chefs and journalists participated in the poll to rank the best restaurants worldwide. A further thirteen British restaurants made it onto the elite eateries list, four in the top ten. This gives the home of fish and chips an unusual reputation as a culinary paradise. Britain is infamous for its bland and uninspiring food, which is scoffed at by the more sophisticated palates of its French neighbours.

7. About a month ago we came up with the phrase that became our motto: «Make something people want». We"ve learned a lot since then, but if I were choosing now that"s still the one I"d pick. Another thing we tell is not to worry too much about the business model, at least at first. Not because making money is unimportant, but because it"s so much easier than building something great.

1. In the East, the Atlantic Provinces had been settled with En glish speakers as early as 1497. when the British explorer John Cabot claimed Newfoundland, but even today these areas contain less than 10 per cent of the population, so that they have only a marginal role in the development of the Canadian "norm". In Quebec, the use of French language and culture remains from the first period of explo ration, with the majority of people using French as a mother-tongue: here, English and French coexist uneasily.

2. In fact, a person"s driving ability can be affected by just one or two drinks. Even if one is below the legal limit, he/she could still be taken to court if a police officer thinks his/her driving has been affected by alcohol. It takes about one hour for the body to get rid of the alcohol in one standard drink. So, if someone has a heavy drinking session in the evening he/she might find that his/her driving ability is still affected the next morning, or that he/she is still over the legal limit.

3. In the ironic words of the novelist Malcolm Bradbury, it is an ideal British product, "needing no workers and no work, no assembly lines and no assembly, no spare parts and very little servicing, it is used for the most intimate and the most public services everywhere. We call it the English language..." Dr Robert Burchfield, former Chief Editor of the Oxford English Dictionary, has remarked that "any lit erate, educated person on the face of the globe is deprived if he does not know English".

4. To avoid being a victim, use your common sense as you would when traveling anywhere else. Don"t be poring over maps and guide books at street comers; avoid wandering, especially alone, in dimly-lit streets or dark alleys; even if that"s where the «real» bars and clubs are; don"t leave valuables in your hotel room; don"t go off jogging or walking very early in the morning until you have familiarized yourself with the neighborhood.

5. Asked why they did not do physical exercise 49 per cent of girls said that they did not feel comfortable exercising in front of other peo ple, 35 per cent said they did not have time, 34 per cent said they did not look good in exercise clothes, 33 per cent said they did not want to look too muscular and 30 per cent said they were no good at sport. Almost half the girls (47 per cent) said they would rather dance or do yoga than take part in traditional sports.

6- France had only eight restaurants in the top fifty and London was named in March by Gourmet magazine as the Gourmet Capi tal of the World. Ella Johnston, editor of Restaurant magazine, said British people are now «becoming more adventurous eaters».

7. The more I leam, the more I realize that fullness of life does not depend on things. The more I give up, the more I seem to gain. But words will never convince you. You must try it for yourself.

In addition, the n umber of sick days in 28 years of work reported for «happy» A27_____employees was 33, as opposed to 1,209 for the «serious» female employees. 1. Coca-Cola is enjoyed all over the world. «Coca-Cola» and «coke» are registered trade marks which identify the same product of The Coca-Cola Company. About 2 billion gallons are sold every year, in over one hundred and sixty countries.

2. The drink was invented by Dr John Pemberton in Atlanta on 8 May 1886, but it was given the name Coca-Cola by his partner, Frank Robinson. In the first year, only nine drinks a day were sold.

3. The business was bought by a man called Asa Candler in 1888, and the first factory was opened in Dallas, Texas, in 1895. Coca-Cola is still made there. Billion of bottles and cans have been produced since 1895.

4. Diet Coke has been made since 1982, and over the years many clever ads have been used to sell the product.
