73rd separate submarine division
Based: Belushya Bay New Earth(according to plan), Liinakhamari village (actually).
History: formed to develop a base on the island of Novaya Zemlya. Formed on 12/1959. Reorganized on 05/04/1960 into the 42nd brigade. Composition: 613 (4 units S-157, S-160, S-232, S-144). An attempt to base submarines on Novaya Zemlya ended in failure. By the fall of 1956, the submarines were prepared to perform all their inherent tasks. One of the commanders, Vasily Grigorievich Kichev, was appointed commander of a submarine division based in Belushya Bay on the island of Novaya Zemlya. The basing of the submarine in Belushya Bay in winter conditions was very difficult. Severe frosts and tidal movement of ice forced personnel to constantly chip away at the ice around the submarine. This was the first and last attempt to base submarines on the island of Novaya Zemlya. In the spring of the following year, the division was transferred to Polyarny. Our submarines performed combat duty missions. In July 1957, the S-45 was included in the division (which also included the S-44 and S-142) based on Novaya Zemlya - to participate in nuclear tests, and in July the boat arrived in Belushya Bay.

Quantitative composition of the Submarine Forces and classification of submarines of the USSR Navy

From the author's book

Quantitative composition of the Submarine Forces and classification of submarines of the USSR Navy By the beginning of the Great Patriotic War as part of Navy The USSR had 212 submarines, which, depending on their surface displacement, were divided into four classes: small

There is no information on this topic on the official website of the Russian Ministry of Defense (you can verify this by going to
link). This causes disappointment and bewilderment, because trying to hide the name and place of permanent deployment
(base point) of a military unit is a hopeless matter. There is enough data in the public domain to
fold
mosaic, and there are already a lot of folded mosaics.

This review is based on two sources:

1) draft symbols of the Northern Fleet formations from the websiteAcademy of Russian Symbolism "Mars", which includes, in addition to the emblems of the formations, their official names and chain of command; the date of publication is not indicated, however, from the discussion at the Collectors Forum it is known that as of September 16, 2011, the project was in the stage of approval with the leadership of the Navy, from which we can conclude
about a sufficiently high degree of reliability of the source at that point in time;

2) review “The Entire Russian Fleet”, published in the analytical weekly “Kommersant-Vlast” dated February 25, 2008 (unfortunately,
Subsequently, the publication was prosecuted for disclosing state secrets!!! and the review was no longer published).

about which ships were (are) listed as part of the Northern Fleet, regardless of their technical condition

In 1973 I graduated from college with honors and by my choice, as an excellent student, I was sent to serve in the 11th division of the 1st Flotilla of nuclear submarines of the Northern Fleet, based in Zapadnaya Litsa Bay, which included second-generation submarines pr. 670. In the personnel department I was assigned for further service in the second, 302nd crew, commander of the sonar group, RTS engineer. In those years, each 2nd generation nuclear submarine had 2 crews, first and second. I took over my command from Captain-Lieutenant Kirillov Yuri Vasilyevich, who was assigned to the crew of the K-201 submarine, which was leaving for Kamchatka along the southern route, around Africa. Now Yuri Vasilyevich is a rear admiral, retired. He finished his service as deputy commander of the 2nd flotilla of the Pacific Fleet.

The 302nd crew was the 2nd crew of the K-87 submarine, and therefore both crews of this submarine lived in the same barracks on the same floor. This was how it was customary in the navy to house the 1st and 2nd crews of one submarine together. At that time, the K-87 was undergoing mid-term repairs at SRZ-10 in Polyarny, and therefore our 302nd crew occupied the entire floor of the 11th division barracks.

Who would have thought that in a few years I would serve in the crew of the K-87, and go from the commander of the warhead-4, the head of the RTS to the commander of this submarine. At that time, he commanded the submarine “K-87” cap. 1st rank Suvorov Nikolai Mikhailovich. Yes, the same one, under whose command the submarine “K-429” on the night of June 24-25, 1983 “lay down” on the bottom of Saranaya Bay in Kamchatka during trimming. It was a tragedy, but more on that later.

At that time, in my opinion, exceptional care was shown for the young officers arriving in the fleet. The division commander, Rear Admiral R.A. Golosov, (sorry, I forgot some names and patronymics), and the deputy head of the political department of the division talked to me and wished me good service.

I was received well in crew 302. The crew had just arrived from leave after combat service in the Mediterranean.

Gorky-built Project 670 submarines were a threat to American aircraft carriers at that time, and we were proud of it. They carried on board 8 underwater-launched homing cruise missiles with a firing range of 70 km. and 14 homing torpedoes. Of this amount of weapons, up to 6 units. had a nuclear “filling”.

My first commander was the strict but fair captain 1st rank Kopeikin Arkady Alekseevich. The political officer is captain 2nd rank Nikolai Nikolaevich Spitsin. My immediate superior was the head of the RTS, commander of the warhead-4, captain 3rd rank Lev Semenovich Tsulimov, who helped me in the first days of my service and in my development as a submariner officer. Sometimes, before going to the galley of our division for lunch, he suggested that I have a glass for my appetite, but I modestly refused. At that time in the navy, of course, they drank diluted “shil”. This is the name given to the alcohol that was used to service equipment.

I was placed in the barracks together with the commander of the electronic navigation group, Lieutenant Tsygankov, who had also just arrived in the fleet after graduating from college, and they gave us a separate room in the barracks. Having received certificates for admission to independent management of the position held and duty on the ship and a deadline of 2 months, the “navigator” and I spent all evenings on a submarine, where we studied the management of our specialty and the structure of a submarine, in order to then carry out duty on the ship . We were helped to qualitatively study the submarine by docking submarines at SRZ-10 in the city of Polyarny, “K-25”, and then “K-325” at SRZ-35 in the city of Rosta. At the dock with Tsygankov, we were appointed “brigade commanders,” that is, commanders of the brigades for cleaning and painting the submarine’s main ballast tanks. Each brigade included up to 5 sailors and midshipmen. The work was dangerous, you could suffocate from the paint, the so-called red lead, diluted with ethinol, and therefore the tanks were constantly ventilated. There was always a belay person at the entrance to the tank, and the work time in the tank was 30 minutes. and was interrupted by a short rest with “airing” the lungs for 10 minutes.

We met the deadlines for passing the tests successfully, an order was issued on the ship for our admission, and we proudly felt like full-fledged members of the crew. After leaving the dock repairs, I was able to go to sea with my crew for post-dock tests. At the beginning of 1974, not without the help of the wife of my immediate superior, capt. 3rd rank Lev Semenovich Tsulimov, (she was the head of the dormitory), I was given a bed in the officer’s dormitory in a room for bachelors (at that time I was unmarried, my future wife was finishing her studies in Gorky). Lieutenant Tsygankov received a room in a residential building because... he was already married.

The 302nd crew was friendly and united. I will name only a few names that I remember. The commander of the BC-5 was Cap. 2nd rank Vorontsov Ivan Alekseevich, commander of the 1st division - cap. 3rd rank Teslenko, commander of the 2nd division - cap. 3rd rank Zaichenko, commander of the ETG was Art. Lieutenant Alexander Yashenin, commander of the warhead-2 group - senior lieutenant Vladimir Mikhailovich Ledovskoy. I will cross paths with them more than once in my service.

We celebrated New Year 1974 with joy. The political officer appointed me as the crew's Santa Claus, and on December 31, 1973, I walked around the apartments where the families of our officers and midshipmen lived, congratulated their children on the New Year and gave gifts. I walked alone without the Snow Maiden with a bag of small gifts. Almost everyone I visited was eager to treat me to a glass, and it was with difficulty that I returned to our crew for the New Year’s table, but I completed the task.

But here, the seemingly calm course of service and life at a permanent place that has just begun is disrupted by the need to transfer me to another crew, to a new formation, to the same position, but to a new submarine "K-479" Project 670M with a more advanced weapons and weapons. The new crew had to undergo training at the famous 1st Navy training center for submariners in Obninsk. Subsequently, I learned that my new commander, captain 2nd rank Vladimir Nikolaevich Voroshnin, specially in the personnel department of our 1st Flotilla selected for his crew officers who graduated from college with honors, which subsequently affected the high level of training and training of the crew. Not all officers wanted to go serve in new formations, even those who were promoted, since they lost all the bonuses to their official salary (northern, naval, etc.). In addition, it was necessary to rent out housing, collect a container, disrupt children from school, etc.

In February 1974, I was appointed commander of the GAG, RTS engineer on the submarine pr. 670M "K-479" and left as part of the crew for the training center in Obninsk.

The submarine pr. 670M was a continuation of the submarine pr. 670 and, unlike it, had an additional living compartment, better living conditions for the personnel and a convenient, spacious central post for combat operations. With great desire and enthusiasm, we began to study the new ship, its weapons and new weapons.

Before arriving at the training center, we in the naval crew in Moscow were dressed in a “green” uniform, the uniform of the internal troops, to camouflage ourselves from foreign intelligence, so that no one would know that submarine crews were trained at the training center in Obninsk. It was funny, because all the townspeople knew about us and our profession, and the black boots gave us away, because... land officers wore brown boots. The only good thing about this change for us was that the green shirts could be washed less often than the cream-colored naval shirts. The commander of the Navy Training Center in Obninsk at that time was our famous 1st commander of the first nuclear submarine of the 1st generation, Project 627 “K-3”, Rear Admiral Leonid Gavrilovich Osipenko, (in the circles of commanders he was called our Soviet “Admiral” Rickover"). American Admiral Rickover is considered the father of the US nuclear submarine fleet.

I was lucky again with the team I ended up with. These were wonderful people, classy specialists - submariners who loved their specialty, their crew, their submarine. Some members of our crew became famous submariners and admirals.

The crew commander was captain 2nd rank Vladimir Nikolaevich Voroshnin. He was a competent and thoughtful officer, an intelligent, patient, caring and calm boss in his interactions with his subordinates. He constantly took care of the unity of the crew, participated in and led all festive evenings held as part of the crew, was a good psychologist and teacher, and correct in his educational work with his subordinates. He demanded from us a conscientious and attentive attitude to the study of the new ship and its weapons. They also assigned the task to each officer to prepare himself for service on a ship one step higher in his position. That is, we had to be ready to fulfill the duties of our immediate superiors.

The senior assistant was Captain 3rd Rank Vladimir Petrovich Lushin, who came to us from command classes. Subsequently he became the commander of the submarine, Hero Soviet Union, deputy of the State Duma. He recently passed away.

The assistant commander was captain-lieutenant Anatoly Pavlovich Pasinitsky, a Belarusian by nationality. He was a demanding, meticulous, pedantic officer who always brought his decisions to the end, and some officers to the point of hysteria.

The political officer was Cap. 3rd rank Nikolai Stepanovich Yakubovsky, who came to serve with us after working in the Komsomol Central Committee. He was a caring and demanding educator and a principled communist. In 1974, he brought from Moscow from the department of the Komsomol Central Committee an invitation card to the final event of the All-Union 14th Komsomol Conference - a concert, and presented it to me, as the secretary of our Komsomol organization. It was a magnificent concert for the conference delegates, an unforgettable event.

The commanders of combat units and divisions were young, but competent and dedicated officers, with the military rank of senior lieutenant or captain-lieutenant, most of whom graduated from military schools with honors. Later we met with some of them and continued our service in Kamchatka.

This is the commander of BC-1 - senior lt. Fomin Ivan, (he is no longer alive today), commander of BC-2 - senior lt. Alexander Skirdonov, commander of BC-3 lt. Alexander Zorokhov, commander of BC-4 , head of the RTS - senior lt Yagodkin Vladimir Ivanovich - my immediate superior, commander of the warhead-5 - cap. 3rd rank Belov Anatoly Kuzmich, head of chemistry. services - Lt. Rejeb Nursakhatov, head of medical. services - Lieutenant Zhurbiy, commanders of divisions cap.- Lieutenant Anatoly Kholodkov, Art. Lieutenant Alexander Yashenin, Capt. Lieutenant Nikolai Gontseryuk. And the group commanders: Lt. Plishkin Alexander Fedorovich, (with him we served together in Kamchatka, and today we have already finished our service and went into the reserves here, at the Naval Training Center in Sosnovy Bor), Lieutenant Konstantin Zavada, Lieutenant Viktor Petrykin, Lieutenant Sergei Lisitsky, Lieutenant Ivan Cherevichny, Lt. Valery Vedeneev.

In competition with other crews trained at the Training Center, our crew constantly took leading places not only in studies, but also in sports.

In the summer of 1974 while on vacation me and Lt. Sergei Lisitsky got married, (before that we were the only bachelors among the crew officers). We brought our wives to Obninsk, but we did not receive housing in a hostel. On this basis, I even quarreled with the deputy political officer. 3rd rank Nikolai Stepanovich Yakubovsky.

In the Charter of the Internal Service of the USSR Armed Forces, Article 1 states that service in the Armed Forces is a special type of public service. I couldn’t wrap my head around how it was that officers who were public service, they cannot provide housing, and why is this not reported to the command in Moscow, right up to the Minister of Defense. At that time, UC teachers were not given housing for years, and they occupied rooms in the dormitory where submariners who arrived for training were supposed to live.

We never received housing until the end of our studies and my wife and I rented rooms from residents of the city of Obninsk. We still communicate with one family from Obninsk, where we rented a room, the Merzlikins, like close relatives. At that time, a lieutenant at the training center received 200 rubles, and they paid 30 rubles for a room, but that was enough to live on. Before leaving for Obninsk at my old duty station in the North, I received up to 400 rubles. with all the extras.

I would like to express special gratitude to the teachers training center for our training. After all, the UC teachers were people who stood at the origins of the creation of the country’s nuclear submarine fleet and went through difficult service on the 1st generation of nuclear submarines. They came out with honor emergency situations, burned, irradiated and sank more than once on their submarines and had extensive experience in their operation. Thanks to them, we gained good knowledge and solid skills in servicing weapons and equipment, in the combat use of submarine weapons and simply good seamanship. Having arrived at the 11th Division after training, we confidently went to sea and performed our duties at a high organizational and technical level.

In 1975, the crew successfully completed their training and returned to their permanent home base, Zapadnaya Litsa. The 11th division already included the lead submarine of Project 670M - “K-452”. But the construction of other hulls of this series of submarines was stalled due to the low quality of steel for the durable hull. Our crew was forced to do chores for the division. I would like to pay tribute to our commander, Capt. 2nd rank to V.N. Voroshnin, who did not want the disintegration and degradation of the crew. He convinced the command of the 11th Division of the need to maintain a combat-ready crew and work out at least course mission No. 1 on the only submarine at that time, Project 670-M "K-452" and coastal elements of other course tasks, which was done. The crew was retained, but headed by another commander, Capt. 2nd rank Lukashenko. I will talk about the reason for the change of commander below.

In Western Litsa, again, as in Obninsk, they did not give me housing. My wife and I have come to terms with this “trouble.” This eternal problem of all the Armed Forces of the country has not yet been resolved. Remember, as in Bulgakov’s novel “The Master and Margarita”, the main issue of all problems is housing. But we were young, and we already had many friends in the two crews where I had to serve. I was lucky to good people. During our vacation, we were allowed to stay in our room by my former subordinate from crew 302, foreman of the hydroacoustics team, Mr. Volodya Katkov. Then we lived in the apartment of an officer, also from the 302nd crew, a rocket scientist, Senior Lieutenant Vladimir Mikhailovich Ledovsky, a kind-hearted man. At that time he himself lived in a barracks in the city of Polyarny, where the K-87 submarine was being repaired and where he was appointed commander of the missile warhead.

Most of the personnel of our crew were seconded to other submarines of Project 670 of the 11th Division to practice tasks at sea. Feedback on seconded crew members. 2nd rank V.N. Voroshnina were the best, we tried to maintain our brand and the high authority of the K-479 crew. Even the repair of the “emergency” toilet on the quay wall was carried out by our crew with high quality.

In the spring of 1975, the lead submarine pr. 670M “K-452” was preparing for its first autonomous deployment to the Mediterranean Sea. To carry out a full three-shift watch at all combat posts and for practical training, part of the cap's crew was seconded to the submarine. 2nd rank V.N. Voroshnina.

Voroshnin himself V.N. was appointed commander of this submarine due to the illness of its former commander, Capt. 1st rank Osipov. On the 1st combat campaign, our crew sent SPK Cap. 3rd Rank V.P. Lushin, myself and about ten other people. The senior officer on the campaign was the ZKD of the 11th Division, Capt. 1st rank Horsetail, demanding, competent, professional submariner, a man who wrote beautiful things in his time tutorial for all submariners by releasing the book “Submarine Tactics”. In fact, we called this book an unclassified version of the TR-PL. During combat service, he often sat in the commander’s chair at the central post, vigilantly monitored the actions of the crew and constantly twirled his bushy mustache, like Semyon Budyonny’s.

During the campaign, I performed my direct duties as the commander of the GAG, the RTS engineer, and when No. 2 was ready, I kept watch in the 1st combat shift at the BIP. My immediate superior was an experienced, reliable and well-trained officer, cap. 3rd rank Valentin Bledny (today he teaches at the A.S. Popov VVMIRE).

The watch officer of the 1st combat shift was Capt. 3rd rank Georgy Igorevich Gorbunov, commander of the warhead-2 of this submarine, a competent specialist, an erudite officer who had an excellent memory, knew many anecdotes, funny stories and naval tales, in a word - the soul of the 1st combat shift. Currently he is a reserve admiral, lives in Moscow, we are family friends and meet often.

The assistant commander was Cap. 3rd rank Sorokin Gennady Aleksandrovich, competent, cheerful and sociable person. He was the watch officer of the 3rd combat shift, from which we took over the watch during her shift. He constantly took care of the quality of food for the crew, the variety of the menu and providing each submariner with the required allowance. Our paths will cross more than once, and we will become family friends.

Before going to sea, we received information that on the “way” to the Mediterranean Sea in the Atlantic Ocean, our potential enemy had deployed some new hydroacoustic system for searching for submarines with “Quaker” type emitters, as they were called then. But, having traveled all the way to the Mediterranean and back, conducting hundreds of studies of ocean noises, we came to the conclusion that these were biological noises. Currently, some sailors are suggesting that these may be alien sources of radiation.

During the campaign, while on watch at BG No. 1 and No. 2 in the central command center, I absorbed and memorized all the commands, all the actions of the watch commanders, which later came in handy in my future service, but I didn’t know about it yet.

The seventies were the years of the height of the Cold War, with a new round of the arms race and a new technical level. We began to step on the heels of the Americans; our surface ships and submarines were not inferior to NATO ships in armament and technical terms. The autonomous operation went perfectly, the crew showed high professionalism and restraint. In the Mediterranean Sea, we monitored US Navy warships, including the USS Saratoga. They repeatedly launched simulated missile and torpedo attacks on them, which was reported by radio to Moscow.

The long trip tested everyone, what they are capable of and what they are worth; the crew truly became one united friendly family. We still cherish our friendship to this day, we meet, communicate, and help each other.

After 2 months we returned to base. The joy of meeting with family and friends and honorably completing a combat mission filled our hearts. I felt the taste and romance of underwater service, and after a short rest I wanted to go hiking again. But I had to wait a very long time for such a holiday for the soul as a long hike.

The harsh everyday life of the coastal service began. On shore, the submariner takes care of himself. In addition to maintaining the combat readiness of his ship and his professionalism, a submariner in our country is forced to repair his submarine, repair his barracks, carry out coastal duties, do chores, etc. and so on.

Upon arrival from the campaign, the flagship RTS specialist of the 11th division offered me a promotion - the position of commander of the warhead-4, head of the RTS on one of the submarines of our division, but which one was not yet known. The construction of our K-479 submarine was postponed indefinitely, and I agreed.

A month later, having handed in reports for the trip to headquarters and the ship to another crew, my wife and I flew off on vacation. But first there was a mandatory rest in a sanatorium in the village of Mardakan of the Az. SSR on the shores of the warm Caspian Sea. It was still snowing in the North at that time, but we were already swimming in the Caspian Sea. In the sanatorium, the friendship of the crew as part of their families became even stronger and more reliable.

Upon arrival from vacation they announced to me order on my appointment to the position of commander of the warhead-4, head of the RTS on the K-87 submarine, then undergoing medium repairs at SRZ-10 in the city of Polyarny in Pala Bay. The commander of the boat was Captain 1st Rank Nikolai Mikhailovich Suvorov. I have already mentioned this crew above. The submarine has been under repair for 3 years. This was the first medium repair of 2nd generation submarines. The crew lived in barracks. The crew was not provided with housing. The families of the crew lived in Zapadnaya Litsa, and once a month, officers and midshipmen in shifts were released for a week to visit their families on leave. We got home through Murmansk or directly by hitchhiking along dirt roads through the polar hills.

At first, I didn’t immediately realize and understand where I was. After a stormy career in a combat division - a quiet, calm, planned sluggish repair, life in the barracks, a bachelor's life, in the evenings - quiet, everyday drunkenness of some officers and, as it seemed to me, the transformation of the personnel of the submarine into hard workers. For me it was a lot of stress and a tragedy in the full sense of the word. I regretted many times that I agreed to the promotion. I wanted to return everything back, but... service is service, and I had to withstand this blow of fate.

I began to call Zapadnaya Litsa weekly and ask my former commander capt. 1st Rank V.N. Voroshnina help me with the transfer to any other combat plane of our division. But there was no vacant position in the division in my specialty.

I had to accept my fate, continue repairing my department and ship, and wait for the possibility of my transfer to Zapadnaya Litsa.

Crew cap. 1st Rank Suvorova N.M. Overall he was young and not bad. The statutory order reigned in it. According to the weekly schedule, we had political classes, specialized classes in the form of repair training, Komsomol and party meetings, and worship. trips to the cinema in Polyarny, etc. But the absence of family nearby and free evenings weighed on me. I would like to remember and name the names of the officers of the crew of the K-87 submarine, with whom I had to throw in my lot and with whom I had to go through many difficult events, such as the completion of repairs, the delivery of the ship, the renaming of the crew to the second one, humiliating showdowns and reproaches for poor-quality repairs ship from the new command of the 11th division. The division commander at that time was Cap. 1st Rank Tomko E.A., the head of the political department was Capt. 1st Rank B.M. Vasilyev.

But our crew was the first in the 11th division to undergo and complete the medium repair of the submarine in the city of Polyarny. More than 120 modernization works were carried out on the submarine. After repairs, our submarine made the transition under the ice of the Arctic Ocean to Kamchatka, where it successfully carried out combat training and combat service tasks for a long time until it was put into “sludge” in 1990, followed by decommissioning and disposal.

Here are the officers of the K-87 crew: commander Cap. 1st Rank Suvorov N.M., SPK – Capt. 3rd Rank Fomin B.D., PC – Capt.-Lt. Vladimir Vladimirovich Dovgulevich, commander of the warhead-1 Capt.-Lt. Mazhugo Mikhail Aleksandrovich, commander of the ENG Flarid Rashitovich Isangulov, comr. BC-2, capt. Vladimir Mikhailovich Ledovskoy, commander of BC-3, senior lt. Gennady Kolonkov, comr. GAG, I-RTS Sergei Bobrikov, (in Kamchatka he will become commander of the submarine pr. 671RTM) , KD-1 cap. 3rd rank Vladimir Mikhailovich Chistokhodov, (now he serves in military acceptance at NPO "Rubin"), KD-2 cap.-lt. Kosenko Yuri Aleksandrovich, KD-3 cap. 3 rank Chigvintsev Vasily Viktorovich, commanders of the BC-5 groups, senior lt. Krivoshein Yuri, (he unfortunately passed away early, he simply drank himself to death), senior lt. Volodya Ryabchuk, (he is also no longer alive), senior lt. Yuri Kurennoy, who in the future changed his last name to Trofimova, senior lieutenant Vakhnenko Vladimir Ivanovich. As it turned out later, all the officers had good training in their specialty, many of them graduated military school Honours.

In 1977, I was asked to follow the command line and was offered the position of assistant submarine commander of our 11th division. In the hope of leaving repairs for a working boat, I agreed, although I constantly asked myself whether I could cope with the duties of an assistant? But fate again presented me with another surprise. In November 1977 I was appointed assistant commander to my own submarine “K-87” instead of Capt. Dovgulevich.

I accepted my destiny and my destiny and obviously became a fatalist.

At the end of 1977, the average repair of our K-87 submarine was completed, and an order was received to transfer it to the second, 379th crew under the command of the newly appointed cap commander. 3rd rank Gusev Alexey Alekseevich. Unfortunately, he is no longer alive; he died tragically at sea while winter fishing in Primorye. His predecessor, Capt. 1st rank Pashkov Nikolay Grigorievich, was transferred for further service to the training center in Sosnovy Bor. This crew was the first line, and we faced a long and difficult period of reaching the 1st line due to the loss of seamanship and combat skills during 5 years of repairs. In addition, our crews have been renamed. Crew cap. 1st Rank Suvorova N.M. became the 379th crew, and the crew of Cap.3 rank Gusev became the crew of “K-87” and the commanders exchanged seals. Then the K-87 submarine was renamed the K-212 submarine and ordered to be prepared for transfer to Kamchatka by the northern route in 1978.

The process of receiving and transferring the submarine was very difficult. Over the course of 5 years of repairs and 12 years of operation, much of the plane’s property became unusable, and it had to be written off, handed over, and a new one obtained. There were many deficiencies in the repairs, and all the complaints were against our now 379th crew. Our crew became “hostages” of mid-term repairs, and during the entire time before the boat left for Kamchatka, we were repairing it, replenishing spare parts and equipment, etc., in a word, we were the crew to support it. There was no talk of combat training of the crew and their introduction into the line.

On my shoulders, already an assistant commander, fell all the work of daily organization, settling the crew in a new place, plus duty at the division canteen and other concerns. Canteen duty for the 11th Division was the most difficult job at that time, when everyone from the flotilla operational duty officer to the head of the division's political department interfered with your duties. Everyone demanded something from you besides following instructions.

I, as an officer on the command line, was called to the division headquarters and was given an officer’s record book for admission to independent control of a submarine and set a deadline of 2 years. The record book consisted of 3 sections: the record sheet for the assistant commander, the record sheet for the SPK, the record sheet for the commander of the square. Each of these 3 test sheets actually consisted of 3 - 4 sheets.

At the beginning, I was even confused, I didn’t know what to grab onto, what to do first, there wasn’t enough time of day. I didn’t want to go to the division headquarters, even on official business. There they were not very kind to the junior officers with their questions and concerns; there was a sense of lordship and arrogance on the part of the command and staff officers (many division officers complained about this). Therefore, passing my tests at SU seemed like an unrealistic dream to me. Sometimes the service bothered me so much that I wanted to live.

Thanks to the officers and the entire 379th crew, who always provided me with help and support. I still found time to study the naval theater, COLREG-72, and other combat documents and little by little prepared to take the tests for the SU.

I soon learned that there was a large program to transfer the entire series of Project 670 submarines to Kamchatka; they were already being replaced by Project 670M submarines. The K-201 and K-429 submarines have already left for Kamchatka. Our submarine was also being prepared, but already the “K-212” and the submarine “K-325”, which was commanded by my former senior mate on the “K-479”, captain 2nd rank Lushin Vladimir Petrovich.

Many officers did not want to go to serve in Kamchatka, to leave their homes, to travel many thousands of kilometers from the center of Russia. And personnel movements began in the division. Our navigator, Capt. Lieutenant Mikhail Aleksandrovich Mazhugo, left the crew for another plane. But he will still end up in Kamchatka, albeit as a submarine commander.

At the end of 1978, both boats, as part of a tactical group, left for Kamchatka via the northern route.

An order came for our crew to leave by plane for Kamchatka at the end of 1978. Service in the North in the 11th Division had recently fed us up so much that without much regret we began to prepare for a long journey, although we had no idea about serving in Kamchatka, and the distance from our parents’ home was frightening. The division strongly advised us to leave our families in Zapadnaya Litsa and fly without them, and then, while on vacation, fly for them. But we did not agree, we decided to fly as families and began collecting containers with household items and sending them to Kamchatka.

The crew was supplemented with the missing personnel. We were assigned a new SPK Cap. 2 rank Yuri Belotserkovsky, political officer cap. 3rd rank Puzik Viktor Timofeevich, commander of warhead-4, head of the RTS cap.l. Gavrish Vladimir Vladimirovich, (he passed away in 2011), head of chemistry. services of Senior Lieutenant Rodionov Oleg Yurievich and Chief of Medical. service of Major Belyaev A.A. We affectionately called the doctor “father” for his fatherly attitude towards each crew member. But he drank heavily. Packing, sending containers and crew property from the barracks, purchasing air tickets, paying for the crew, organizing training camps fell on my shoulders. I never got housing in the North, I didn’t have children yet, so my personal preparations with my wife were short.

At the very end of 1978, on the eve of New Year 1979, our 379 crew, along with their families and sailors, left in four groups by plane for Kamchatka with transfers in Leningrad, and one group with a transfer in Moscow. My wife and I celebrated the New Year 1979 in Leningrad, waiting for a plane to Kamchatka. We spent the night with the relatives of our warhead-2 commander, Capt. Ledovsky V.M. This New Year I remember my wife and I being very strong at 30 degrees. frosts.

Farewell, gloomy North, to the polar nights. 5 years of service in the 11th division taught me a lot, and most importantly, patience and humility with fate. I gained good experience serving both on a submarine and on shore. Thanks to all the northerners with whom I served!
