The Faculty of Environmental Monitoring is a platform that trains specialists in the most promising areas not only at the republican, but also at the international level. The faculty trains students in a group of engineering specialties related to ensuring rational use natural resources, environmental safety and environmental protection. The dean of the faculty will talk about the specifics of the work of future specialists, the learning process and practical training. Vladislav Vladimirovich Zhuravkov.

– Vladislav Vladimirovich, what specialties exist at the Faculty of Environmental Monitoring?

– Our faculty trains specialists in the following specialties with the assignment of appropriate qualifications:

  • “Nuclear and Radiation Safety”, qualification “engineer”;
  • “Environmental activities”, areas: “ Environmental management and examination" and "Environmental monitoring", qualification "ecologist; environmental engineer";
  • “Energy efficient technologies and energy management”, qualification “energy manager”;
  • “Medical physics”, qualification “medical physicist”;
  • “Information systems and technologies (in healthcare)”, qualification “software engineer”;
  • “Information systems and technologies (in ecology)”, qualification “programmer engineer-ecologist”.

– What are the features of each specialty?

– Nuclear and radiation safety is a branch of applied nuclear physics and biophysics and includes a set of tools and methods for analyzing the radiation fields of sources of nuclear technical installations at the stages of their design, operation and decommissioning, studying the effects of radiation on humans, the environment, biological objects and man-made products, as well as the development of measures to prevent adverse radiation effects.

Such a specialist ensures radiation protection of personnel and radiation safety at nuclear power plants. power stations and in their observation zones, nuclear safety during the operation of nuclear facilities, safe use of ionizing radiation sources in industry, agriculture, forestry, healthcare, science and scientific services, education, construction, geology and subsoil exploration, communications and transport.

Environmental activity is the process of conservation, restoration and reproduction of natural resource potential, which should be an essential component of economic activity as a whole.

In the information center of the nuclear power plant during a lecture on the structure and basic principles of operation of the future station.

The development of environmental protection activities is a necessary prerequisite for overcoming the crisis situation in the environment. Environmental protection activities are often understood in a rather narrow sense - as the elimination of damage already caused to nature (catching, cleaning, etc.). However, in modern conditions The content and direction of activities for nature conservation and conservation of natural resource potential have expanded significantly.

A specialist who has mastered the specialty “Environmental Conservation” works in industry, agriculture, transport and communications, housing and communal services, hydrometeorological service, education, and research activities. Can be employed as an environmental engineer in enterprises, in regional inspectorates of the Ministry of Natural Resources, in analytical laboratories of the Ministry of Natural Resources, and also work as an environmental protection engineer.

Students of the specialty “Energy Efficient Technologies and Energy Management” acquire the knowledge necessary to work in the field of the fuel and energy complex, the introduction of new energy-saving equipment, materials and technologies, energy-efficient use of buildings, structures, utility networks, energy expertise and energy-saving projects.

The activities of an energy manager are aimed at organizing the efficient use of energy with minimal inevitable losses.

The knowledge, skills and abilities acquired during their studies allow graduates of this specialty to work in enterprises and organizations that are energy consumers, regardless of their profile, in the positions of energy manager and energy engineer.

Medical physics is a field of applied physics that studies devices, equipment and physical factors affecting humans used in medicine.

The specialty was opened to eliminate the acute shortage of healthcare personnel capable of ensuring the safe operation of complex medical equipment, mainly in oncology and medical radiology. This is a new and unique specialty; our students have only been studying it for the third year.

A medical physicist works in institutions of the Ministry of Health in the field of using physical methods for diagnosing and treating patients using complex technical equipment, incl. for the purpose of safe use of ionizing radiation sources.

The specialist prepares the appropriate equipment, plans and carries out medical irradiation of patients as prescribed by the doctor.

A medical physicist must be capable of conducting fundamental and applied research in the field of the action of physical factors on the human body, ensuring radiation safety personnel and ensuring the quality of patient exposure when using ionizing radiation sources in medicine.

The specialty “Information Systems and Technologies” is one of the most prestigious and in demand in industrialized countries. The training of specialists involved in the development and operation of industrial safety engineering systems is determined by the increasing requirements to ensure the protection of the vital interests of technological personnel, as well as the population and society as a whole, from accidents at hazardous industrial facilities.

Graduates have high level knowledge and prepared to solve problems in the operation of systems operating as part of a set of measures to predict accidents in industry and ensure the safety of technological processes. In addition, such specialists develop and maintain engineering safety systems.

Students of this specialty study the design of computer networks and systems, their administration and application for implementation information technologies, receive advanced training in programming (including Visual C++, Visual C #, Delphi), Web programming (Java, Perl, PHP, HTML, XML, UML), design and administration of computer networks, development of multimedia technologies and databases (Oracle, MS SQL Server, MySQL Server, etc.), study operating systems and programming for them, and also gain in-depth knowledge in the field of information security and security methods information systems based on software and hardware.

Particular attention is paid to the study of technologies for developing Internet applications, designing information support, organizing information and computing processes and systems, systems for collecting, transmitting, processing and storing information.

From third year to curriculum This specialty introduces specialization disciplines, which are determined by the direction. So, for some these are disciplines related to health care, for others - with ecology.

– What do students learn during theoretical and practical classes?

– Our students study the basics of nuclear and radiation safety at nuclear power plants and when personnel and the public are exposed to ionizing radiation, the basics of medical physics, the use of radiation technologies in medicine, methods of environmental monitoring, radiation monitoring. They learn to calculate the energy efficiency of design solutions, evaluate their environmental safety, and various impacts on the environment. A specialist with such skills can analyze the data obtained and make appropriate decisions on environmental management, conduct a systemic energy analysis (energy audit) of enterprises, technological processes and devices, and evaluate their functional, economic and energy efficiency.

Students of the faculty against the background of the Belarusian nuclear power plant.

– Where do students undergo practical training?

– At each of the six departments there are two types of laboratories. The first type is scientific laboratories, where teachers work, the second type is student research laboratories, where students can work on their own projects.

Each laboratory has its own specifics of work. For example, consider the laboratory of the Department of Nuclear and Radiation Safety. One of the areas of her work is related to the state program to support the safe development of nuclear power plant construction. Thus, the laboratory works, for example, on the impact of a nuclear power plant on the main components of the ecosystem as a result of its operation or on assessing the release of a particular chemical.

Accordingly, laboratories in other departments deal with issues that are related to their priority, specialized areas. This division makes it possible to pay sufficient attention to a particular topic, as well as to concentrate students on specific problems that will be encountered in their future work activities.

– In which organizations do students do internships?

– Faculty students receive good practical training not only in university laboratories equipped with modern equipment, but also on the basis of industrial and energy sector enterprises, divisions of the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environmental Protection, research centers, Hydrometeorological Center, design organizations, High Technologies Park, medical institutions.

– Where can graduates of the faculty work?

– Our graduates can find employment in structural units (committees, inspections, laboratories) of the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environmental Protection; to specialized services of industrial enterprises and associations that are part of the Belneftekhim concern (Naftan, Mozyr Oil Refinery, etc.), to the Ministries of Industry (Minsk Automobile Plant, Belarusian Metallurgical Plant, etc.), to the Ministries of Architecture and Construction and other ministries and departments.

In addition, graduates of our faculty can find employment in scientific (institutes of the National Academy of Sciences, etc.), design and design organizations that work in the field of environmental protection; to commissioning organizations that deal with environmental regulation, environmental impact assessments, and environmental audits.

– Tell us about the new approaches that are used in the process of teaching students.

– I would like to talk about a very promising direction – network education – a relatively new paradigm educational activities, which is based on the idea of mass collaboration, the ideology of open educational resources in combination with the network organization of interaction between participants. The peculiarity of such training is the unification of higher educational institutions for the purpose of cooperation and exchange of experience. In practice, this is implemented as follows: students can study not only at one university, but also at others, where there are those disciplines that will help in mastering a particular specialty.

In addition, at some enterprises of our republic there are branches of our departments, which indicates a practice-oriented approach to training. This also means that in the training process we involve leading practitioners who are employees of certain organizations and enterprises. Of course, such specialists are not professional teachers, but they can conduct a lesson that will most closely correspond to work realities. Of course, this provides high quality student learning.

At the environmental forum in Georgia.

– How is the faculty’s international cooperation developing?

– Our faculty performs international projects TEMPUS HS and TEMPUS EcoBRU, which are aimed at developing curricula for training specialists at the second stage of higher education and retraining specialists in the field of environmental safety.

We cooperate with the University of Novi Sad (Serbia), Federal State Budgetary educational institution higher vocational education"Irkutsk state institute", Russian State Hydrometeorological University, Joint Institute for Nuclear Research in Dubna, Yaroslavl Agricultural Academy, Environmental Protection Fund named after. Suchova (Germany), etc.

– What benefits await future students of the Faculty of Environmental Monitoring?

– Firstly, all our students receive up-to-date knowledge, an excellent education, and a sought-after profession. Secondly, absolutely all students who have chosen a budget-funded form of education will be assigned - that is, their first job, work experience. Thirdly, the qualifications awarded to graduates will allow them to occupy the highest paid positions.

If we talk specifically about the advantages of the learning process, it is worth noting the following: 100% of first-year students are provided with a hostel, students will have a very busy student life, tuition fees are not planned to rise today. I would like to draw your attention to the fact that the cost paid training at the faculty is one of the lowest in comparison with other universities where there are similar promising and relevant specialties.

It is also important that the teaching staff is represented by leading doctors of science, graduate teachers, as well as young and talented workers who introduce innovative teaching methods.
