Pogodin Dmitry Dmitrievich

Dmitry Dmitrievich Pogodin - Major General of Tank Forces, Hero of the Soviet Union, was born on September 2, 1907 in Naro-Fominsk, Moscow Region, into the family of a worker at one of the Moscow factories. Now one of the streets of his hometown bears his name. In 1927, Dmitry successfully graduated from an electrical engineering school in the city of Yegoryevsk, Moscow region, and before being drafted into the army, he worked as an electrician at one of the Moscow factories. In 1931, Pogodin was drafted into the Red Army and immediately enrolled as a cadet in the Oryol Armored School, which he graduated from in 1932. In 1934 he graduated from advanced training courses for technical personnel, and in 1939 from the Military Academy. M.V. Frunze in Moscow.
In October 1936 he was sent to Spain. In Spain, the commander of a tank company, Lieutenant D.D. Pogodin distinguished himself in battles near the city of Pozuelo de Alarcon. His company attacked the enemy and destroyed nine tanks. Pogodin's company more than once helped the infantry to return abandoned positions. On December 31, 1936, for valor and courage shown in battles with the Spanish fascists, D.D. Pogodin was awarded the title of Hero of the Soviet Union. The hero was 29 years old at that time.
After returning from Spain in 1937, Pogodin served as commander of a tank company in the Belarusian Military District (since July 1938 - the Belarusian Special Military District). And, probably, at the same time he was elected a member of the Central Committee of the Communist Party (Bolsheviks) of Belarus. In 1939, as part of the district troops, he took part in hostilities against Poland. After graduating from the Frunze Military Academy, Pogodin was appointed assistant chief of armored forces of the Leningrad Military District. Participated in the Soviet-Finnish War of 1939-1940.
The Great Patriotic War found D.D. Pogodin was part of the troops of the Leningrad Military District, on the basis of which the Northern Front was created in the first days of the war (from August 23, 1941 - Karelian and Leningrad).
Subsequently, Colonel Pogodin was deputy commander of the 123rd Tank Brigade (formerly 1st Tank Division). Then D.D. Pogodin was deputy commander of the 30th Army, deputy chief of the armored forces of the Kalinin Front, and deputy commander of the 1st Mechanized Corps. In the spring of 1943, the 1st Mechanized Krasnograd Corps became part of the troops of the Steppe Front.
As part of the troops of the Steppe Front, the corps had to operate in the conditions of the steppe expanses of southern Russia and Ukraine. After the loss of Belgorod, Orel and other large settlements, the enemy sought at all costs to delay the advance of Soviet troops, who were rapidly advancing in the southwestern and southern directions. In the Kharkov direction, the Nazis prepared a number of defensive lines at advantageous positions.
From Belgorod, the 1st Mechanized Corps advanced in the zone between the railway and the Belgorod-Kharkov highway. We had to move along river valleys with heavily swampy banks; many areas were mined by the enemy. As Soviet troops approached Kharkov, the strength of enemy resistance increased.
To speed up the offensive, it was necessary at all costs to break through to the enemy’s rear and bypass his strong rearguards, who were blocking the path of the troops advancing along the Belgorod-Kharkov railway and highway. For this purpose, a strike group was created consisting of the 219th Tank Brigade and several special units and subunits. The group was led by the deputy corps commander for combat units D.D. Pogodin.
Colonel Pogodin, a brave and enterprising military leader, was well known by all the personnel of the corps. Commanders and soldiers often saw him in the hottest battles. His group was tasked with breaking through from the Mikoyanovka area in the direction of Petrovka, Zhuravlevka, capturing the village of Dergachi and cutting off the enemy’s escape route to Kharkov. However, then, despite decisive and bold actions, the strike group was unable to break through to the enemy rear. She only managed to break through to the large settlement of Cossack Lopan and, after a fierce battle, liberate it.
In an effort to speed up the advance in the Kharkov direction, the corps' troops advanced day and night. From August 6 to August 23, the 1st Mechanized Corps, waging continuous battles on the outskirts of Kharkov, covered 120 kilometers and liberated 80 settlements from the enemy. During this time, corps troops destroyed 132 tanks and self-propelled artillery guns, 10 armored vehicles, 35 artillery and mortar batteries, 12 anti-tank guns, 240 machine guns, 36 aircraft, 151 cars, 58 motorcycles, destroyed 24 bunkers, killed 8211 Nazis, 580 soldiers and officers were captured.
On August 23, Kharkov was liberated by a night assault in the morning.
After the liberation of Kharkov, corps troops as part of the 53rd Army led an offensive in the direction of Peresechnoe and Valki. In the corps' offensive zone, one of the best SS Viking tank divisions in Hitler's army and an enemy infantry regiment were defending.
On September 10, part of the corps was regrouped in the area of the village of Perekop. From here a blow was struck against the enemy, who was firmly entrenched at the commanding heights. The attack of units and formations of the 1st Mechanized Corps began at the appointed hour on September 13, 1943, almost on the move, without preliminary army artillery and aviation preparation, without which it was impossible to break through the enemy’s defenses.
To destroy enemy firing points located on its front line, guns and some tanks were withdrawn and placed in positions for direct fire. After a ten-minute artillery preparation by the corps' artillery and a two-minute fire raid by tank fire, the first echelon brigades quickly attacked the enemy. Despite the bravery and courage of the corps’ soldiers, it was not possible to break through the enemy’s defenses in a given direction.
Wanting to influence the success of the battle of one of the mechanized brigades fighting in the first echelon, in a vehicle driven by Sergeant Major A.A. Gorelyshev, Colonel D.D. Pogodin moved his tank into the brigade's battle formation. An enemy shell hit the tank, which caught fire. Pogodin ordered the crew to leave the car, while he continued to control the battle while in the burning car. When the flames engulfed the tank's turret, he jumped out of it, completely burned, in smoldering uniform, and headed to another vehicle. At that moment, an enemy bullet ended the life of D.D. Weather. The driver of the car is A.A. Gorelyshev, despite the deadly enemy fire, did not abandon his commander. He carried him out in his arms and delivered him to the corps command post.
Pogodin died on September 13, 1943 at 1 p.m.
Dmitry Dmitrievich Pogodin never learned that he had been awarded the rank of major general of tank forces and that he had been awarded the Order of the Red Banner.
For military merits D.D. Pogodin was also awarded the Order of Lenin, the Order of the Patriotic War, 1st degree, and the medal “For the Defense of Leningrad.”

Pogodin's body was brought to the city of Vladimir, where at that time his family was living in evacuation - his wife Ekaterina Georgievna and two children - Ella and Vitaly (the family lived on Spasskaya Street). According to the recollections of his comrades, if he died, he wanted to be buried in Vladimir. This event caused a great resonance in the city. Coffin with the body of D.D. Pogodin on September 16 was set for farewell in the building of the city party committee (Pervomaiskaya street, now) for two days.
